President Miguel Díaz-Canel assures Cuba will resist imperialist onslaught

by Ed Newman

President Miguel Díaz-Canel asserted on Friday that Cuba and its people will resist and the United States will be added to the shameful list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Commenting on the most recent sanctions imposed by the United States against the island, the president noted that “the executioners seem to have chosen Thursdays to publish their blacklists with the names of individuals and institutions whose only crime is serving #Cuba, confronting the #GenocidalBlockade.”

“We will resist and prevail. And the U.S. will be added to the shameful list of genocidal states,” he emphasized.

On Thursday, the U.S. State Department announced sanctions against three officials of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), including its president, Fernando González, vice president, Noemí Rabaza, and director for North America, Leima Martínez.

As part of the escalating harassment and maximum pressure campaign by the Trump administration against Cuba, the punitive measure from the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added nine Cuban companies and entities to the list.

These include Acinox Comercial, Geominsal, Metalcuba, and the Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara Nickel Company, as well as the Ministry of Construction and the Agency for Contracting and Commercial Representations SA.

Also included were Coratur SA, Transimport, and Consumimport, three companies belonging to the Foreign Trade Business Group (Gecomex), which had already been sanctioned by Washington.

The document released by the U.S. authorities justified the new round of sanctions based on the defamatory State Department report of July 20, titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st-Century Communism,” which was rejected by Havana.

All the entities sanctioned this Thursday by the U.S. State Department “have been designated pursuant to Executive Order (EO) 14404,” according to the text.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez stated that in his failed obsession against Cuba, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has now targeted executives and officials.

He noted on his Telegram account that Rubio continues to punish Cuban companies with the deliberate purpose of harming the economy and preventing the Cuban government from guaranteeing basic services to the population, which is already “in a critical situation as a result of the blockade.”

The top Cuban diplomat emphasized that, in particular, it obstructs the transport of containers with food, medicine, and medical devices, mostly purchased by Cuban private MSMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises).

Bruno Rodríguez stressed that, in his failed obsession against Cuba, he is now targeting directors and officials of ICAP, “an institution that for more than six decades has promoted friendship, international solidarity, justice, and peace.”

This is the complete opposite, Cuba’s foreign minister emphasized, of what the “Secretary of State has always promoted in his corrupt policies.”
