Preparing the people for defense remains an activity of enormous priority, reaffirmed the President of the National Defense Council, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, on National Defense Day this week.
The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic participated this Friday morning in the preparatory activities of the Casablanca Zone Defense Council (CDZ), in the municipality of Regla, where he denounced the most recent sanctions adopted by the United States government against the Cuban nation.
These sanctions, he reiterated, are closely related to statements made in the past by the President of the United States and the Secretary of State; the former when he said that Cuba was left only to be devastated, because they had brought us to a position of maximum pressure with the measures; and the latter who has constantly stated that all of Cuba’s escape valves are going to be closed.
These statements, Díaz-Canel pointed out, serve as a reminder that there is a persecution of our entire economic and financial sector, and of everything being implemented in the country to confront this situation.
In response to these attacks, the President of the National Defense Council (CDN) highlighted the work that has been carried out in recent months to defend the homeland at all levels, and especially in the defense zones.
At the Casablanca Defense Zone (CDZ), Díaz-Canel Bermúdez was accompanied by members of the Political Bureau, Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly; Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee; Army Corps Generals Álvaro López Miera, Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), and Lázaro Alberto Álvarez Casas, Minister of the Interior (Minint); and Major General Amado Ricardo Guerra, Secretary of the Council of Ministers.
Also participating were Major General Ernest Feijóo Eiró, Chief of the Western Army; members of the Havana Provincial Defense Council, the Regla Municipal Defense Council, and the Zone Defense Council, as well as other commanders and officers.
Johannes Milián Morales, president of the Defense Zone Committee (CDZ) in this overseas district, reported that more than 10,000 people reside in the territory, which covers just 2.9 square kilometers.
During the presentation, Milián Morales outlined the defense zone, its structures, forces, and resources, among other tasks.
He paid particular attention to the organization of alerts and population protection, the number of people to be protected, and the training of production and defense brigades, both in the communities and in the economic and social centers, among other details.
In addition to specific defense activities, the President of the Casablanca CDZ addressed the zone’s projections for the implementation of the 176 measures of the Economic and Social Transformation Program in this defense zone.
With the Participation of the People
In evaluating the work being done in Casablanca, as in the rest of the country, the President of the National Defense Council (CDN), Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, indicated that all this effort must be supported by political mobilization, political and ideological work with the population, and their participation in the main tasks and priorities being addressed in the country today.
“In the economy,” we must work on implementing the transformations, which is the fundamental challenge we now face.”
He explained that these transformations have already been discussed at the level of grassroots Party organizations, and that now comes a decisive stage: their discussion with workers and with people in the community; that is, people who are not linked to production and service centers or to grassroots Party organizations, but who are active in the communities.
The First Secretary of the Party and President of the Republic reflected on the importance of these debates at all levels and in all places, noting that if the people do not defend the transformations, it is highly unlikely they will be implemented as planned.
The transformations are also – he argued – “a process of systematic construction, of continuous improvement; therefore, many new ideas will emerge from the population during the debate, and certain shortcomings will also arise during implementation that will need to be corrected. This is closely linked to the contribution and participation in the transformations.”
Commenting on the actions being taken to address the problems affecting the population, Díaz-Canel Bermúdez emphasized that this is a process that must continue to be refined, taking advantage of the country’s strategy of working with wartime structures in peacetime.
“The provincial, municipal, and zonal defense councils have become the central hub where the main analyses are conducted and the main decisions are made, both in the political and ideological spheres, as well as in the economic and social spheres.”
Returning to the tasks being carried out in the Defense Zones, the president emphasized the importance of protecting the population, stressing that they need to know where to go for shelter, how to get there, and how to evacuate the elderly, children, and other vulnerable individuals. This requires a series of actions to prepare them.
