Carlos Jorge Méndez, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, affirmed this Wednesday that Cuba continues its development despite the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, during the opening of the BRICS 2026 United Economic Business Summit in New Delhi, India.
According to the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina, the official denounced that the energy embargo applied by Washington has intensified the coercive measures against the island, violating international human rights standards.
In his remarks, Méndez emphasized that the Cuban government maintains its commitment to multilateralism, solidarity, and friendship among peoples, and highlighted new economic measures to promote investment and private sector participation.
Cuba’s deputy minister of foreign trade advocated for strengthening international cooperation and considered it necessary to expand economic relations and solidarity between countries in the face of current challenges.
Later, he participated in the session “Cuba in the BRICS Era: Unlocking New Opportunities for India-Cuba Trade, Investment, and Economic Cooperation,” organized by the Schumacher Center.
D.K. Giri, President of that institution, recalled the role of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, in establishing bilateral relations and friendship with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, highlighting Cuba’s resilience on the international stage.
Méndez expressed his satisfaction with India’s invitation and noted that this year marks the centenary of the historical leader of the Revolution, whose legacy has global reach.
The deputy minister expressed his gratitude for the session dedicated to Cuba and detailed incentives for investment in sectors such as tourism, energy, agri-food, biotechnology, infrastructure, and transportation.
He invited Indian businesspeople to participate in the Caribbean nation’s development program and affirmed that Cuba views India as a friend and partner in its economic transformation.
