Cuba: A symbol of resistance at the Fête de l’Humanité

“We will never renounce peace, and as long as Cuba exists, there will be proof of socialism, both present and future,” declared Deputy Marydé Fernández López on Friday during a debate at the Fête de l’Humanité.

The member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (CCPCC) pointed out that the United States has maintained an economic, commercial, and financial blockade for over 60 years, which, starting in January of this year, also extended to include energy.

Fernández López, who heads the CCPCC’s office for the Union of Young Communists and mass organizations, highlighted that since December, only one oil tanker has entered Cuba, resulting in a loss of 1,400 megawatts of power generation.

The party official denounced that, due to this policy of US strangulation, the country experiences up to 30 continuous hours of blackouts, while even under these conditions, hospitals maintain their operations thanks to their medical staff and the support of emergency power units.

“We are a people ready to resist and defend ourselves against aggression, if necessary, but what impacts us most now is the solidarity shown by the world, which demonstrates that we are not alone,” she noted.

At the same time, she referred to the need to mobilize political forces so that Europe implements a legal tool, the blockade status, which for now is not being applied by the governments of that region to defend the interests of their businesses.

For her part, Katia Aruca Chaple, an official from the International Relations Department of the CCPCC, emphasized that in Cuba, seven out of ten Cubans were born and live under the effects of the US economic embargo.

Cuba is a country of struggle, imbued with commitment and unity for the Revolution because its history has demonstrated the importance of unity, something that the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Raúl Castro, calls on us to “cherish like the apple of our eye,” she noted.

We know we are not alone, for we are supported by truth, reason, dignity, and the fact that we have defended peace, international law, and the self-determination of peoples. Therefore, we have friends of Cuba throughout the world, the official affirmed.

Aruca Chaple considered it necessary to increase solidarity with Cuba, not only symbolically but also legally, to help us dismantle the narrative that the small Caribbean nation is a threat to the United States. Cuba is not a threat; it is a country of peace, she emphasized.

Precisely, this narrative was used to justify the implementation of the executive order of January 29, regarding the energy blockade, and the one of May 1, to punish companies that trade with Cuba with extraterritorial measures, she stated.
