The BRICS countries, meeting in New Delhi, India, have expressed their solidarity with Cuba in the face of the aggressive actions of the Trump administration, and reiterated the need to end the economic, trade, and financial measures against the Caribbean nation, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly.
At the close of the high-level summit held in that Asian country, a declaration entitled “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” with 140 points, was released, expressing their vision of a multipolar world based on peace, a democratic international order, the right of peoples to their sovereignty, and more equitable forms and rules of global trade.
In point 27, the document states: “Underlining the character of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, based on mutual respect, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and non-intervention, we express our deep concern about the situation in Cuba due to the tightening of unilateral blockade measures against the country, their adverse effects on the Cuban economy and energy supply, and the alarming humanitarian impact on the Cuban people. In this regard, we reiterate the need to end the economic, commercial, and financial measures against Cuba, in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/4.”
Another section reaffirmed the condemnation of the imposition of unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law, including unilateral economic sanctions and secondary sanctions, “which have far-reaching negative consequences for human rights, including the rights to development, health, and food security, of the general population of the affected States, disproportionately affecting the poor and vulnerable, deepening the digital divide, and exacerbating environmental problems.”
The declaration calls for the elimination of these unlawful measures, which undermine international law and the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations. “We reaffirm our opposition to unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law and the Charter of the United Nations, including sanctions not authorized by the United Nations Security Council.”
Cuba is participated in this summit as an associate member of the bloc, represented by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, who attended the session on Sunday.
The BRICS group was initially composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and expanded in 2024 with the addition of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Iran, and in 2025 with the inclusion of Indonesia.
Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam are partner states.
