Statement from the International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity for the Peoples on the re-election of Lula and defeat of fascism

by Ed Newman

Nothing is impossible for those who fight.  Lula and the Brazilian people have succeeded in defeating fascism.

On behalf of the International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity for the Peoples, we congratulate Lula—our Lula—who, in a colossal battle alongside his entire mobilized nation, managed in just two weeks to reverse the results of the first round, in which the fascist Flavio Bolsonaro had led by more than two million votes.

On October 4th, Lula called upon the entire population—PT militants, activists, workers, women, peasants, students, and intellectuals—to go door-to-door to change the outcome.

Abstentions and blank ballots were reduced; people turned out to vote despite the far-right’s attempts to sabotage public transport—including buses and domestic flights—in an effort to suppress the popular vote. It was deeply moving to see elderly citizens—many with significant mobility challenges, using wheelchairs, walkers, or canes, and some even being carried in the arms of their children—making their way to the polls. Others crossed rivers in small boats, while people from the Northeast hurried to reach their polling stations. It was truly epic. Five million Brazilians who had not voted in the first round cast their ballots today, adding ten million votes to Lula’s total.

The battle was waged in public squares, on the streets, in homes, on social media, and through culture. It was led by workers, peasants, young people, women, and Afro-Brazilians, who spoke with a clear, direct language that reminded everyone of the Lula from the great struggles of the metalworkers’ unions. The people succeeded in defeating the greatest fascist threat in Latin America.

In the year of Fidel’s centenary, we embrace Lula’s victory—securing his fourth term—and feel the relevance of Fidel’s words more strongly than ever: “Nothing is impossible for those who fight.” Lula has proven it! To the dismay of imperialism and Zionism—and to the chagrin of Trump, Milei, Rubio, and the Bolsonaros—the *Patria Grande* (Greater Homeland) celebrates this victory. It is a triumph that we must all join in and support, ensuring that the claws of imperialism and fascism do not undermine the hope that is being reborn today.

Go, Lula!! Long live our dear President Lula!!
