Havana, September 22 (RHC) – The Cuban team defeated their Puerto Rican counterparts today at the start of the sixth edition of the Women’s Final Six tournament organized by the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA).
The Cuban team had to dig deep to defeat their rivals in a five-set match, kicking off their campaign with a victory in a tournament that also features squads from the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and the host nation, Mexico.
Cuba started the match by dominating the first set (25-20); however, the home team leveled the score in the second set (25-21) and took the lead in the third (25-18).
With no margin for error, the team from the largest Caribbean island showed great grit to tie the match in the fourth set—winning 25-19—and force a tie-breaker, which they ultimately won 15-12.
Attacker Eviliana Martínez led the Cuban offense with 19 points, while attacker Dariana Hollingsworth stood out for the opposing side with a game-high 23 points.
In the second round of the competition, scheduled for tomorrow, the Cuban team will face the United States, a squad making its debut this Monday against Canada.
