Cuban deputy foreign minister denounces illegality of energy blockade

by Ed Newman

Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío has denounced the illegality of subjecting Cuba to economic strangulation as a form of collective punishment for political ends.

“It is illegal, immoral, and criminal,” the deputy minister wrote on his Facebook account, referring to the intensification of the economic, financial, and energy blockade maintained by the United States government against the island.

At the same time, Fernández de Cossío noted that the importation of fuel into Cuba by state and private entities from any country is indeed legal, in accordance with national legislation and international law.

“Handling, storing, distributing, and marketing that fuel within Cuban territory is also legal, as is transporting it in international waters,” he emphasized.

However, he asserted that it is illegal “to intimidate sovereign states with threats of reprisals from the U.S. government if they export fuel to Cuba, or to intimidate exporting companies or carriers from any country for participating in commercial operations of that nature.”

The deputy foreign minister also denounced the illegality of harassing and intercepting vessels transporting fuel to Cuba in international waters, as well as acts of piracy.
