Havana, September 15 (RHC) – Arturo Silot (97 kg) from Santiago de Cuba will begin his Cuban wrestling performance this Monday at the World Wrestling Championships, which will be held until the 25th in Zagreb, Croatia.
Silot, champion of the 2021 First Junior Pan American Games in Cali-Valle and the island’s only representative in freestyle, will face Turkish Resul Gune as his first opponent. The giant from Santiago de Cuba spent time training in China.
Cuba ultimately traveled to Zagreb with seven competitors. The delegation is led by Luis Orta (67 kg) from Havana, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion. Also participating in the Greco-Roman competition are world champion Gabriel Rosillo (SCU, 97 kg) and world runner-up Oscar Pino (130 kg) from the capital.
Orta and Rosillo are seeded in their respective divisions. This status gives them the advantage of being top seeds in the draw, avoiding early rounds of competition against other favorites.
For this World Championship, the classic wrestling competitors had the opportunity to train in Bulgaria.
In women’s freestyle wrestling, Milaymi Marín (HAV, 76 kg), Olympic bronze medalist at Paris 2024, was selected. She is accompanied by Laura Herin (CMG, 53 kg) and Yaynelis Sanz (GRA, 55 kg), two-time Junior Pan American Games champion (Cali-Valle 2021 and Asunción 2025) and undefeated in 20 bouts so far this year.
The three women did not have a training base outside the island. They reinforced their training on the mat at Esfaar Cerro Pelado, primarily against several men who demanded a lot of effort from them.
