Yankees Climb to the Top of the Major League Baseball Division

by Javier Perez Jimenez

Havana, September 25 (RHC) – The New York Yankees woke up today at the top of the American League East division in American baseball, after taking advantage of Toronto’s downward slide.

The Big Apple’s flagship team defeated the Chicago White Sox the day before and combined that success with Toronto’s loss to the Boston Red Sox to climb to the top of their district.

The Yankees now sit in first place with 90 wins and 68 losses, tied with Toronto and three games ahead of Boston (87-71).

All three teams are virtually assured of their spots in the October postseason, either as division leaders or with wild-card berths. The other New York team, but in the National League, Mets (81-77), fell resoundingly on Wednesday against Chicago Cubs (89-69), however, managed to keep their wildcard spot intact, after the second consecutive defeat of Cincinnati (80-78) against Pittsburg (69-89) and the defeat of Arizona (80-78) against Dodgers (89-69).

With four games remaining in the regular season, the Mets, Arizona, and Cincinnati are vying for the last available spot in the National League playoffs (Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Cubs, Dodgers, and San Diego have already qualified).

Meanwhile, in the American League, only the Yankees, Toronto, and Seattle have a guaranteed spot, while Boston has a 99 percent chance of becoming the fourth wild card.

The remaining two wild card spots will be contested by Cleveland (86-72), Detroit (85-73), and Houston (84-74).

The Major League Baseball regular season will end next Sunday, and just two days later, the postseason rounds will begin.
