Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, celebrated the receipt of the BSAP Reverse the Red 2025 award, granted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
From his account on the social media platform X, the president congratulated environmentalists for the recognition of the excellence of the National Biological Diversity Program, based on science, citizen participation, and conservation actions.
“Cuba received the BSAP Reverse the Red 2025 Medal awarded by the @IUCN, in recognition of the excellence of our National Biological Diversity Program, based on science, citizen participation, and conservation actions. Congratulations to all our environmentalists!”
The Reverse the Red 2025 International Award, one of the highest biodiversity-related honors, was presented in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to Cuban Ambassador Norberto Carlos Escalona Carrillo during the IUCN World Conservation Congress.
The award, granted by the IUCN-led Reverse the Red International Coalition, recognizes countries that formulate and implement National Biodiversity Action Plans (NBSAPs) with scientific rigor, social participation, and specific actions for species recovery.
Cuba is among the 26 award-winning nations, along with Argentina, Australia, Burkina Faso, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, France, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of Moldova, Slovenia, the State of Palestine, Togo, Tonga, Tunisia, and Uganda.
Cuba’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan to 2030 is the result of a collaborative, multisectoral, and multidisciplinary process coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (Citma) with the support of specialized UN agencies.
Founded in 1948, IUCN is the world’s largest environmental organization, with more than 1,200 governmental and non-governmental members and approximately 11,000 volunteer experts in nearly 160 nations.
