Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez visited the farm of former Uruguayan vice president and widow of former president José Mujica, Lucía Topolansky, on the eve of his performance in Montevideo, which is part of a Latin American tour.

This was reported—through a post on the social media platform X—by the Popular Participation Movement (MPP), the political group that forms part of the ruling Broad Front, which Mujica led until his death on May 13th and of which Topolansky is also a leader.

“Lucía welcomed Silvio Rodríguez to the ranch. “Life was past, but there is more to come,” wrote the MPP, quoting the song “Más porvenir,” which Rodríguez dedicated to the former Uruguayan president last January. This post was accompanied by a video with images of the meeting.

“Más porvenir” was the song with which Rodríguez joined “Una canción para Pepe” in January, the initiative to send Mujica songs, poems, and other messages of affection, after it was learned that his esophageal cancer had spread and the politician asked the press and visitors who regularly visited his ranch to enjoy his final months.

“Dear Pepe, this is my greeting from Cuba to you and Lucía Topolansky, Mujica’s wife. I composed these verses in 2009, when I heard you say some things. A few days ago, I finished them and put this music to them that you’re about to hear now,” the Cuban singer-songwriter said in the video.

Performing this Friday in Uruguay

Rodríguez, who will have his first performance this Friday and a second on Saturday at the Antel Arena in the Uruguayan capital, has already toured Chile and Argentina as part of a Latin American tour that, according to the musician’s Instagram account, will also include stops in Peru and Colombia.

During his stay in Buenos Aires, where he performed at the Movistar Arena on October 11 and 12 and will perform again next Tuesday, the Cuban singer met with former Argentine President Cristina Fernández, who has been serving a six-year house arrest sentence since June.

In Argentina, he was also recognized by the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, who presented him with a white scarf, a symbol of his uninterrupted struggle to discover the whereabouts of their children who disappeared during the last civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983).
