Fernando González: Cuba has areas in which to contribute to the BRICS

by Ed Newman

Fernando González, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), highlighted Cuba’s potential as a BRICS associate country, highlighting areas such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, health, and education.

“Cuba has areas in which to contribute to the BRICS, from the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries to the development of our health system and our education system,” González stated.

He also noted that Cuba’s participation in the grouping provides development opportunities based on projects emerging from the BRICS, benefiting not only Cuba but also the global level.

Cuba, as an associate country, already actively collaborates with several BRICS members on various projects of common interest.

Within the framework of this cooperation, Cuba and Egypt, a full member of the BRICS group, strengthened their collaboration in the health sector, with special attention to drug production, technology transfer, and institutional strengthening.

According to media reports, during a meeting in Cairo, Cuban Ambassador Alexander Pellicer and Egyptian Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between the two countries and reaffirmed their willingness to promote joint projects in pharmaceuticals, scientific research, and public health.

At the same time, Cuba continues to strengthen its ties with Brazil, a full member of the BRICS group. With Brazil, President Miguel Díaz-Canel consolidated a roadmap for food sovereignty and nutritional security, incorporating experiences in urban agriculture, renewable energy, and school feeding programs, as well as the creation of a joint working group to implement the commitments made. This was reported by El Maipo, a BRICS TV partner.

Cuba signed 11 collaboration agreements in areas such as infrastructure, artificial intelligence, agricultural cooperation, traditional medicine, and culture.
