China has rejected Washington’s coercive tactics and pressure on other nations, while emphasizing its support for Cuba against the blockade Washington has imposed on it for more than 60 years.
In response to a question from Prensa Latina, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun pointed out that the United States not only fails to reflect on its actions, but is intensifying its policy of coercion, which violates international law, the basic principles of international relations, and humanitarian law.
He emphasized that this stance places the United States at odds with justice and equity, which will generate widespread opposition from the international community.
The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman indicated that China firmly opposes the US embargo and has voted in favor of the Cuban resolution in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly for 32 consecutive years, since 1992.
He added that nearly 190 countries support the resolution, clearly reflecting the majority position of the world.
Guo Jiakun reiterated China’s support for the Cuban people’s right to choose their own development path, defend their sovereignty, and reject external interference.
He noted that Washington must take concrete measures to improve its relations with Havana and contribute to peace and stability in the region.
On several occasions, the Chinese Foreign Ministry urged the United States to lift the blockade as soon as possible and remove the island from the so-called list of state sponsors of terrorism.
The UN General Assembly has annually approved the resolution presented by Cuba against the US embargo since 1992.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez emphasized yesterday that the United States is resorting to intimidation and blackmail tactics to undermine international support for the lifting of the blockade, in a maneuver he described as a disrespectful offensive.
During a press conference in Havana, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the US government’s actions violate the sovereignty of states and the right of each nation to freely decide its vote in the United Nations General Assembly.
Rodríguez presented copies of official communications sent by Washington to numerous governments in which, he stated, “crude pressure, direct threats, and slanderous arguments” are used to dissuade countries, especially in Latin America and Europe, from continuing their support against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade.
He also explained that Washington’s pressure includes the refusal of third countries to supply spare parts or fuel to Cuba, as recently occurred with one of the country’s main thermoelectric plants, directly affecting the national electrical system.
