On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s message to Cuban university students, Cubadebate and the Fidel Soldier of Ideas Website share with their readers a selection of quotes, photographs, and a video that commemorate that significant meeting on the now historic steps of the University of Havana.

On September 3, 2010, the Commander in Chief called on Cuban youth, urging them to reflect on their role in society and the need to develop a critical political consciousness. In his remarks, the leader of the Cuban Revolution highlighted the urgent need to work for a more just world and emphasized the responsibility of university students in the fight against war, the use of nuclear weapons, and environmental destruction in the context of the threat of a military conflict against Iran, prepared by Israel and the United States.

Below are some excerpts: “This staircase, to which I never imagined I would return, holds indelible memories of the years when I began to realize our times and our duty. One can acquire knowledge and awareness throughout a lifetime, but never at any other time in their existence will a person again have the purity and selflessness with which, as a young person, they face life. At that age, I discovered my true destiny.”

“Thanks to the example of those who came before us, to the students shot at the behest of the hordes of so-called Spanish volunteers, many of whom were born in this land and put themselves at the service of Spanish tyranny, thanks to the Apostle of our independence and the blood shed by tens of thousands of patriots in three wars of independence, we were truly preceded by a history that inspired our struggles. We did not deserve to be a colony of an even more powerful empire, which seized our homeland and a good part of our national consciousness, sowing fatalism with the idea that it was impossible to shake off such a powerful yoke.” (…)
