by Ed Newman

The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, stated this Friday that experience shows that when facing extreme situations such as a lack of food, medicine, and hygiene and sanitation, unity leads to good results.

In Pinar del Río, where his working visit to municipalities continued, the head of state emphasized that the province has reached higher levels of planting of foodstuffs such as plantains, rice, and beans, which, although insufficient, demonstrate the will of the territory and its inhabitants.

He stated that Cuba must increase rice planting next year in order to become self-sufficient in the grain in the short term, and that means doubling plantings and increasing yields.

Accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the PCC Central Committee, Díaz-Canel called for the defense of this unity, addressing existing problems and engaging with popular participation.

In a meeting with political and government authorities from the western territory, he noted that “we must foster moments where we sit down with the population to discuss the issues.”

A popular dialogue has been held across the country on the Draft Labor Code Bill; we will hold another on the Government Program so that people can make proposals for improvements. and we will also conduct a prior consultation of the documents from the 9th Party Congress,” he said.

He emphasized the urgency of Pinar del Río fulfilling its plans for foreign currency and export earnings, the investments in solar parks planned for this year and next, and continuing to seek more local offers in the national currency.

The president listed some of the problems currently facing the province, such as solid waste collection, water supply to the population, and the epidemiological situation, all of which require work.

During a tour of economic centers in the municipalities of Minas de Matahambre and Viñales, he reviewed some of the alternatives to overcome the current obstacles.

The industrial fishing subsidiary of Puerto Esperanza, in the latter territory, is currently establishing productive linkages with private companies and military units to guarantee the acquisition of fuel.

“This has been one of the main constraints to fulfilling the productive plans,” explained Noriel Arteaga González, director of the entity, who emphasized that They will soon reach 300 tons of tobacco harvest, a figure that has eluded them since 2019.

For his part, Yosniel Hernández, secretary of the Municipal Committee of the PCC in Minas de Matahambre, stated that the area will exceed the amount planted in the previous tobacco campaign by more than 200 hectares, and the municipal agro-industrial company already has three livestock modules.

Morales Ojeda urged greater attention to the Union of Young Communists, where the PCC’s continuity lies.
