Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez: U.S. representative to the United Nations lies

by Ed Newman

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez has refuted the speech of the United States permanent representative to the UN during the debate on the draft resolution on the need to end the blockade.

“I wish to raise a point of order pursuant to Rules 71 and 68 of the Rules of Procedure,” Cuba’s foreign minister said while Michael Waltz was speaking in plenary.

“The permanent representative of the United States not only lies, subtly straying from the topic, but also speaks rudely and arrogantly against your presidency (referring to General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock),” he added, insisting that his words go “against the dignity of this Assembly and its member states.”

“He does so,” he emphasized, “with a lack of culture, rudeness, and vulgarity that are unacceptable in this great and democratic chamber.

“Mr. Waltz, this is the United Nations General Assembly, it is not a Signal group, nor is it the House of Representatives,” he concluded.

Amid a parade of speakers on this first day of debate, in which countries and groups of countries discussed the impact of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade on the island, the resilience of its people, and the role of Cuba in international cooperation, Waltz was the point of contention.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez is leading the Cuban delegation in New York to participate until Wednesday in the discussion and vote on the draft General Assembly resolution calling for the lifting of the U.S. blockade.

“We will defend the #TruthOfCuba and the international community, which the US government seeks to manipulate and change under unprecedented pressure,” Rodríguez stated the day before on the social network X.

His corrupt political clique fears being once again isolated by the overwhelming UN majority’s condemnation of its measures of economic suffocation and suffering against the Cuban people, warned the foreign minister, who used the hashtag #TumbaElBloqueo.

This is the thirty-third time a proposal has been debated arguing for the need to end this unilateral blockade, imposed more than six decades ago by successive Democratic and Republican administrations without distinction.

The international community has unequivocally rejected the blockade, which last year only found support from two countries, the United States and its ally Israel, compared to the overwhelming majority of 187 others who opposed it.

According to official data, the blockade has caused $7.556 billion in damages in the last year, a 49 percent increase compared to the previous period.
