The drums of war are beating once again * Statement from Casa de las Américas *

by Ed Newman

This is not mere bravado, much less a movie: these are the drums of war in their purest form.  This is not a smokescreen: it is a real and imminent danger.

The United States’ military deployment in the Caribbean Sea, near the Venezuelan coast, has entered a new phase with the deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford. This killing machine operates under the pretext of “combating drug trafficking,” the same pretext that has been used in recent weeks for the extrajudicial killing of 76 people in Caribbean and Pacific waters.

The objective of the US administration is clear: to overthrow the legitimate government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela at any cost. Meanwhile, a US senator, as pathetic as he is dangerous, predicts that Maduro’s days are numbered and that Venezuela, Colombia, and Cuba are part of a “drug caliphate.” The consequences of these actions and threats could be catastrophic.

Casa de las Américas denounced this escalation from the outset, aware that it is not only a danger to Venezuela, but also a slap in the face to the self-determination and sovereignty of our peoples. An action against any of our sister nations on the continent is a blow to us all.

While some focus on the images of Gerald R. Ford as if it were a video game, those of us who have personally experienced imperial aggression and violence condemn the prelude to a grave crime and call for international solidarity with the peoples of the region.
