Fundraising campaign for Cuba advances in Italy after Hurricane Melissa

A new fundraising event was held in the northern Italian city of Pordenone as part of the campaign to support the Cuban people following the severe damage caused by Hurricane Melissa, according to a press release.

The National Association of Friendship between Italy and Cuba (ANAIC) highlighted in a statement the participation of hundreds of people in the event, held yesterday and organized by the local chapter of the organization in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, to reaffirm its solidarity with the Caribbean nation in the face of the complex situation it is facing.

Walter Persello, secretary of the ANAIC chapter in Pordenone, emphasized the importance of increasing aid to the island at this time, when natural disasters are compounded by serious energy problems and a difficult economic situation, as a consequence of the criminal blockade imposed by the United States.

For his part, the national president of that association, Marco Papacci, expressed his gratitude for the broad participation in this new initiative, “essential for strengthening friendship with the Cuban people.”

Papacci emphasized “Cuba’s great dignity and extraordinary capacity for resilience,” which for more than sixty years has faced “an unjust, anachronistic, and inhumane blockade that affects people’s daily lives, health, energy, schools, food, and life itself.”

“However, despite all these difficulties, Cuba remains standing, giving the world lessons in international solidarity, courage, and humanity,” noted the president of ANAIC.

The event held in Pordenone is one of several that have taken place throughout Italy in response to a call to action launched by the association under the slogan “Let’s Help the Island,” which joined the “Energy for Life” National Campaign launched jointly by several Italian organizations at the end of September.

In recent statements to Prensa Latina, Papacci highlighted that, for the first time, the Italian Association for Social Promotion (ARCI), the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL), and the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI) are participating in this effort alongside ANAIC.

In this regard, fundraising efforts in Italy to support the Cuban people are progressing, with tax-deductible donations being collected in the bank account held at Nexus Emilia-Romagna ETS, IBAN: IT58D 05018 02400 000011318730.

The funds raised will be used to support the operation of schools, hospitals, workplaces, and cultural centers, among other essential activities, as well as to assist the population affected by Hurricane Melissa, the ANAIC leader explained.
