Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, congratulated two-time Olympic champion Alberto Juantorena today on his 75th birthday.

In a message on his official X profile, the Head of State highlighted that the “Elegant of the Tracks,” as he is also known, is the protagonist of one of the greatest feats in world sport: being a double champion in the same Olympics.

“A worthy Cuban, who made us feel, with his double gold in Montreal 1976, the pride of being from this small and immense land,” Díaz-Canel wrote.

Alberto Juantorena Danger won gold medals in both his specialties: the 400 and 800 meters, at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, becoming the first man in history to achieve this feat.

Later, at the 1977 World Cup in Düsseldorf, he again won gold in the 400 and 800 meters.

The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) recognized the Cuban as the best athlete in the world in 1976 and 1977.

Since retiring from active competition, he has held various positions related to sports in Cuba; he is currently Vice President of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) and President of the Cuban Athletics Federation, as well as a member of the International Olympic Committee and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
