The role of Cuban education in the transformation of society and the Revolution was highlighted today at the national event for Teacher’s Day, led by Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (CCPCC) and President of the Republic.
The event, held at the José Martí Anti-Imperialist Tribune in Havana, was also attended by Manuel Marrero Cruz, member of the Political Bureau of the Party and Prime Minister of the Republic, the Ministers of Education (MINED) and Higher Education (MES), among other leaders from the Party, the State, the Government, the Young Communist League, mass and student organizations, and others.
During the ceremony, the president awarded the Frank País Order, First Class, which honors educators with meritorious results and significant contributions to the sector. This award is granted at the proposal of the Ministry of Education and approved by presidential decree.
The José Tey Medal was also presented by Marrero Cruz, along with the Distinction for Cuban Education and a special recognition from the Ministry of Education, all intended to acknowledge the daily work of teachers.
Naima Ariatne Trujillo Barreto, head of the Ministry of Education, recalled in her keynote address some of the ideas of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, who, in his thought and actions, always urged the promotion of the educational and cultural development of the people to achieve the transformation of Cuban society.
Trujillo Barreto highlighted the work of the sector’s employees, who make a great effort to adapt to the difficult circumstances facing the country and find successful alternatives, demonstrating that being a teacher is a lifelong commitment.
She further emphasized that, despite the complexities of our times, the revolutionary education system continues its progress, which, given its universal and free nature, continues to inspire the world, which recognizes Cuba’s ability to anticipate goals that remain utopian in many regions of the planet.
In an exclusive interview with the Cuban News Agency, Isabel Río Leonard, a distinguished researcher at the Central Institute of Pedagogical Sciences and recipient of the Frank País Order, First Class, expressed her satisfaction in receiving this decoration, which recognizes 42 years of dedicated service and, at the same time, represents her commitment to continue contributing to the country from her own sphere of influence.
She also stated that at this time, when imperialist actions have intensified, the challenge for teaching professionals is to continue educating authentically Cuban citizens, humble and imbued with the values that distinguish the revolutionary process.
On this day in 1961, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz declared the end of the Literacy Campaign to the world. This campaign had brought together thousands of volunteers who traveled to different regions of the country.
Cuba was then proclaimed a territory free of illiteracy and thus began the great educational work of the Revolution. Every December 22nd, the nation recognizes the professionals in the education sector.
