Cubasolar: The magnitude of its projects

by Ed Newman

The Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources and Environmental Respect (Cubasolar) confirmed that in 2025 it maintained its vitality in the management, monitoring, and execution of its international collaboration projects.

One of these projects, with the Solidarity for Development and Peace (SODePAZ) group, has already concluded and focused on supporting municipal decentralization in Jesús Menéndez (Las Tunas) with Renewable Energy Sources (RES).

The project contributes to building a sustainable and resilient local food industry in that municipality of Las Tunas province, focusing on agro-industrial capabilities and the circular economy (Phase I), Luis Bérriz Pérez, the only president of Cubasolar since its creation 30 years ago, told the Cuban News Agency. He added that it is financed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

He commented that the Solar Energy for Life Project is continuing, expanding the energy sustainability of the Finlay Institute of Vaccines with the multi-phase installation of a 302.5 kWp grid-connected photovoltaic system at Vaccine Plant 3.

He noted that once the first phase (127 kWp installed) is completed, a second phase (173 kWp) is underway, and the purchase of resources is being tendered by the UN Development Programme. This purchase helps synchronize photovoltaic systems, promoted by its Small Grants Programme, with the national electricity grid.

According to Bérriz Pérez, the plan includes connecting eight small photovoltaic parks (113 kWp) to the national electricity grid in six municipalities across the country.

The projects “Women of Holguín for Agroecological Leadership for Food Sovereignty,” by the NGO Solidaridad Luxemburgo-Cuba, are in various stages of management, coordination, and approval. These projects aim to increase the productive capacity of systems led by women in five municipalities of Holguín province by using renewable energy sources (RES) to develop agroecological farming techniques.

Also underway is the project “Support for RES in Municipal Decentralization in Jesús Menéndez: Capacities in Agro-industries, Circular Economy, and Local Energy Management F.II (SODEpAZ),” funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), to expand their application in relation to agro-industrial production and basic public services for the population.

From a public relations standpoint, Cubasolar participates in activities convened by the Environment and Sustainable Development and Climate Change Commissions of the Cuban Association to the UN.

It also participates in the forum of the Society Against the Blockade; and in the 30th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Peoples’ Convention, held in November in Belém, Brazil.
