New York City’s newly sworn in Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he is following closely the US military capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, as well as their planned imprisonment in federal custody in the city.

In a post on X, Mamdani said that “unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and violation of federal and international law.”   He added that this blatant pursuit of regime change doesn’t just affect people abroad; it directly impacts New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who call the city home.

Mamdani stressed that he will focus on their safety and the safety of every New Yorker, and that his administration will continue to monitor the situation and issue relevant guidance.

Meanwhile, hundreds of New Yorkers filled Times Square Saturday afternoon to oppose the war on Venezuela.  According to footage distributed on X by The Peoples Forum, protesters carried placards reading “No War on Venezuela, No War for Oil,” “Arrest Trump,” and “Hands Off Venezuela”, among others.

According to The Peoples Forum, the rally in Times Square was one of over 75 protests taking place in cities across the United States.
