Demonstration in Italy in support of Cuba against Washington’s threats

by Ed Newman

In response to the growing threats from the United States against Cuba, dozens of political and social groups in Italy, along with the Cuban community residing there, mobilized today in Rome to reject these actions.

The massive demonstration that took place in front of the Cuban Embassy in Rome, was attended by leaders and members of solidarity organizations such as the National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (ANAIC) and La Villetta per Cuba.

Leaders and members of the Communist Party, the Communist Refoundation Party, the Socialist Homeland Party, and the People’s Power Party also participated, as well as the Union of Base Trade Unions (USB) and the National Association of Italian Partisans.

Also in attendance were members of leftist youth groups, such as the Communist Youth Front, Cambiare Rotta, the Alternative Student Opposition, and the Federation of Communist Youth, joined by members of communities of nationals from Latin American countries, as well as from Palestine and Sri Lanka, among others.

At the start of the event, the Cuban ambassador to Italy, Jorge Luis Cepero, requested a minute of silence to honor the 32 revolutionary fighters from his country who died in Venezuela during the U.S. attack on January 3, in which President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were kidnapped.

The diplomat noted that 2026, the centennial of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, began full of challenges, “after that brutal attack,” which he described as “another open wound in Latin America and the Caribbean,” an act that violated the sovereignty of an independent nation.

“This is how the year has begun for us, with profound sorrow for the loss of 32 courageous brothers, whom Cuba mourns, but of whom we are proud because they demonstrated that Cubans do not flee, Cubans do not retreat.”

In the numerous speeches delivered during this event, which lasted for more than two hours, the various speakers expressed their rejection of imperialist threats and their unconditional support for Cuba and its Revolution.

The leader of the solidarity group La Villetta per Cuba, Luciano Iacovino, stated that “to stop that fascist murderer, that damned US president, Donald Trump, the unity of all political and social forces is necessary,” which was evident today, and he asked that “please, let us maintain this unity.”

Speaking on behalf of Cubans residing in Italy were, among others, Ulises Mora, Indira Pineda, Olga Lídia Priel, Lázaro Martín Díaz, and Ada Galano, directors of various associations.

Mora asserted that Cuba’s resistance to U.S. threats and attacks “is living proof that dignity, when collective, is more powerful than any empire.”

For his part, Galano stated that “Cubans are an indomitable, rebellious, and energetic people,” because “our history is written in the blood of many sons and daughters of the homeland,” and “dignity has always been the banner raised on the battlefield.”
