Cuba denounces U.S. oil blockade at BRICS meeting in India

by Ed Newman

Cuba has denounced the illegal US measure to prevent the supply of oil to the people of the Caribbean nation at the first BRICS Sherpa meeting, which continues today here.

At the meeting, which began Monday in New Delhi, the Cuban ambassador, Juan Carlos Marsán, described this new step by the US administration as criminal, aimed at starving Cubans.

Before representatives of the countries participating in the intergovernmental blockade, the diplomat called on the international community to condemn Washington’s unilateral measure, which threatens to impose tariffs on countries that trade oil with the island.

Because of this decision, the United States is stifling Cuba’s economic development to an unprecedented degree and placing the nation in a situation that experts compare to the genocide in Gaza.

Meanwhile, at the meeting, India’s Secretary for Economic Relations and BRICS Sherpa, Sudhakar Dalela, highlighted the key priorities of the South Asian nation’s presidency, based on a people-centered approach and prioritizing human beings, according to diplomatic sources.

Details about the discussions at the meeting, the first in terms of the analyses led by New Delhi, are still pending.

Last January, India unveiled the website and logo for its BRICS presidency this year, marked by a humanist character under the theme “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

On that occasion, Foreign Minister Subrahmanyan Jaishankar stated that his country is focused on cooperation to address shared challenges in a balanced and inclusive manner.

This meant working to foster dialogue, cooperation, and practical solutions, taking into account national priorities and responding to complex issues such as geopolitical uncertainties, economic outlooks, climate risks, technological changes, and development gaps.

The Foreign Minister noted that India will be guided by the goals of building resilience to strengthen capacities in areas such as agriculture, health, disaster risk reduction, energy, and supply chains, enabling members to withstand global crises.

It also means promoting innovation by deploying new and emerging technologies to address socioeconomic challenges, particularly those faced by developing countries, through cooperation with startups and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Furthermore, it means fostering cooperation and sustainability by promoting climate action, clean energy, and sustainable development pathways.

BRICS brings together 11 major emerging markets and developing countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.

It provides a valuable platform for consultation and cooperation on contemporary issues of global and regional importance, as well as on matters of global political and economic governance.

Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam joined BRICS as partner countries in 2025.
