President Claudia Sheinbaum: Mexico could open air bridge to send aid to Cuba

by Ed Newman

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Friday that Mexico could open an air bridge, if Cuba requests it, through which other countries could deliver aid to the Caribbean nation.

“If Cuba requests it, those conditions would be met, of course,” the president asserted in response to a question about this possibility during her usual press conference, in a context marked by the tightening of the United States blockade against the island.

The Mexican president also noted that flights are not canceled.   Aircraft “can come to Mexico (to load jet fuel).  In fact, flights by Mexican airlines to Cuba are not closed, because there is jet fuel here and it is very close,” she pointed out.

On Thursday, the Mexican Navy ships Papaloapan and Isla Holbox arrived in Cuba carrying approximately 814 tons of essential food and hygiene products, after departing from the port of Veracruz on Sunday.

“As soon as the ships return, we will send more aid of various kinds,” stated Sheinbaum the day before, who has described the energy blockade imposed by Washington as unjust.

On January 29, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring a supposed national emergency and establishing a process to impose tariffs on goods from countries that supply crude oil to Cuba.

Meanwhile, the ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party, as well as groups such as the Militant Solidarity Collective for Cuba and the Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico, called on the public to send food supplies to Cuba.

Organizations have warned that depriving Cuba of access to oil will paralyze the country and constitute collective punishment, considered by international law to be genocide and the most egregious violation of human rights.

Diverse voices in Mexico and the rest of the world, from parliamentarians to political movements and organizations, have spoken out in support of the Caribbean nation in the face of the United States’ energy blockade, which they have described as cruel and anachronistic.
