Mexican labor organizations call for solidarity with Cuba

by Ed Newman

More than 30 labor organizations today called on the people of Mexico to show solidarity with Cuba by collecting food supplies, breaking the media blackout, and providing oil support, in the face of the tightening of the U.S. embargo.

“We will join the solidarity mobilizations with the island and will send medicine and food in the coming days,” the 33 unions, associations, fronts, and federations announced in a message addressed to workers and the public.

They warned that the intensification of the embargo following a recent executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump, which threatens to impose tariffs on countries that supply crude oil to the Caribbean nation, has caused “one of its worst energy and economic crises.”

The organizations reported cars stranded on the streets due to lack of fuel, the closure of schools and universities, and shortages of food, medicine, and basic services such as drinking water.

The trade unions groups asserted that “no human being can remain indifferent to this terrible situation” and pointed out that traditional media outlets do not report on, much less explain, the real causes of what is happening on the island, besieged for more than 60 years by an economic blockade, now intensified.

Solidarity with Cuba is “a humane, fraternal gesture, without reservations, because we cannot and must not tolerate the suffocation of an entire people for thinking differently,” the organizations affirmed, including the Union of Workers of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

In their view, the enduring dignity of the largest of the Antilles “is an open wound” for Washington, which seeks “to end the historical cycle of progressive governments, because as long as the Cuban people stand tall, their dignity will endure.”

The trade union organizations stated that Trump’s aggression “is an escalation of imperialist policy in the face of its imminent economic crisis due to the advance of China and Russia, at the expense of the lives and natural resources of the Latin American region and others.” countries.”

“The genocide against the Palestinian people, the impunity surrounding the violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty, the infamous and inhumane blockade against Cuba, and the terrible violence perpetrated by ICE against our migrant brothers and sisters are all part of the same geopolitical strategy,” they stated.

The worker’s organizations added that this strategy is based “on racism, economic ambition, ideological conservatism, and also desperation.”

The labor unions affirmed that “the empire has been able to overthrow and defeat almost all historical experiences in Latin America that aspire to build political and economic alternatives to its own, except in Cuba.”

“The nobility of its people, their dignity, persistence, discipline, their ‘we’ so characteristic of the America that Martí dreamed of, gives them a strength that has saved them from collapse on more than one occasion, and this will be no exception,” they predicted.
