Selected Works of Raúl: A Gift for Cuban Youth

by Ed Newman

The Ignacio Agramonte Plaza at the University of Havana was the chosen venue for a presentation of the Selected Works of Raúl Castro Ruz on a historic day for the country, the 131st anniversary of the February 24 uprising that restarted the war for independence, or the Necessary War, as National Hero José Martí called it.

Elier Ramírez Cañero, deputy head of the Ideological Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, stated in presenting this work that its more than 500 texts, arranged chronologically, allow readers to follow the thread of a life in revolution, clarify many passages of Cuban national history that should be studied in depth, and learn about someone who is a paradigm for several generations.

He emphasized that access to these nine volumes is a gift for young people, who can find in these books passages of national history written by one of its protagonists, including previously unpublished pages from Raúl Castro’s campaign diary as a guerrilla fighter in the Sierra Maestra.

Daily Sánchez Lemus, deputy director of the Office of Historical Affairs, offered details of the four years of editorial work that went into compiling the collection, published by Ediciones Celia, and stressed that the compilation is vitally important for promoting the study of history and fully appreciating the feat accomplished by the Centennial Generation.

It is an essential tool for researchers, teachers, students, and readers committed to memory, ethics, and the revolutionary legacy, he stated.

Also present at the event were Rolando Yero Travieso, head of the Department of Attention to the Social Sector of the Central Committee of the Party; Eduardo Martínez Díaz, Deputy Prime Minister; Major General Víctor Rojo Ramos, head of the Political Directorate of the Revolutionary Armed Forces; and Meybis Estévez Echeverría, First Secretary of the National Committee of the Young Communist League (UJC).
