Pastors for Peace: Defending Cuba means fighting for humanity

by Ed Newman

The Executive Director of Pastors for Peace, Claudia de la Cruz, emphasized today that the struggle to defend Cuba is part of the battle for humanity and the dignity of all peoples.

“We have arrived here in Cuba to reaffirm something that Cuba has taught us: the value, the principle, and the ethic of solidarity,” the activist stated during a meeting with Cuban officials and representatives of the *Nuestra América* (Our America) Convoy at the Palace of Conventions.

Claudia De la Cruz highlighted that, from their vantage point in the United States, they have it “very clear who the enemies are: the very same ones attempting to suffocate the dream—the collective construction—of this socialist project called Cuba. These are the enemies of Palestine, the enemies of Haiti, the enemies of Puerto Rico, and the enemies of the people of the United States.”

The leader of Pastors for Peace underscored that the current U.S. President, Donald Trump, “is a product—a result—of a structure and a system that has been committing acts of aggression against Cuba and countries around the world for a long time.” She called for a strengthening of the anti-imperialist struggle, describing it as a “historical responsibility of the people of the United States.”

“If we lack the capacity to defend the Cuban people—if we lack the capacity to defend a project that has prioritized humanity and that places internationalism and solidarity at its very center—then we will lack the capacity to fight for the liberation of our own peoples,” she asserted.

The activist expressed gratitude for Cuba’s capacity to “open its doors and its hearts” at all times, and pledged that the struggle in defense of the island is one they “will carry in our hearts.”

“Cuba, as always, will triumph. And we—all of us—will stand with you until victory is won,” declared Claudia De la Cruz, who concluded by stating that “victory lies precisely in eradicating that system and those structures that suffocate Cuba and commit aggression against the world.”
