Demonstration for Cuba in front of U.S. Embassy in Madrid

Hundreds of people demonstrated on Saturday in front of the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, where they chanted slogans expressing solidarity with Cuba and opposition to the economic blockade.

Organized by the State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC) in Spain, the gathering was one of the major events held over the weekend outside U.S. diplomatic missions across the Iberian nation.

In a call to action circulated by the MESC and its chapters in Madrid and the Basque Country, organizers highlighted that these events coincide with the international convoy delivering aid to Cuba, coming at a time of intensifying economic, financial, and commercial encirclement imposed by Washington.

“This is an internationalist and global cry in defense of Cuba’s sovereignty and against the imperialist policies seeking to suffocate the island through an economic, financial, and energy blockade,” stated a communiqué read aloud at the demonstration.

Additionally, Cuban flags, banners, and large fabric placards were displayed to denounce the White House’s attempts to suffocate the Cuban people.

“No to War,” “Hands Off Cuba,” and “No to NATO” were among the slogans visible on the signs displayed outside the U.S. diplomatic mission in the Spanish capital.

The MESC—which brings together more than 60 organizations and solidarity groups supporting Cuba in Spain—called upon the people of Madrid, political and social organizations, trade unions, youth and feminist collectives, and the Cuban community residing in the capital to join forces.
