Cuba reaffirms defense of its sovereignty at 1st CELAC-Africa Forum 2026

by Ed Newman

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla has reaffirmed Cuba’s firm stance in defense of its sovereignty, as well as its willingness to keep its doors open to South-South cooperation initiatives.

During his address at the 1st Forum of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and Africa (CELAC-Africa 2026), held in Colombia, Cuba’s foreign minister advocated for strengthening bi-regional cooperation.

Cuba’s top diplomat denounced the structural inequalities affecting Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa, noting that their peoples share a history of colonial domination and struggles for dignity and freedom.

He warned against the resurgence of imperialist practices and criticized the doctrine of “peace through strength” promoted by Washington—a doctrine he characterized as a new manifestation of domination and a threat.

Bruno Rodriguez also underscored that countries of the Global South bear the responsibility of fostering a just, democratic, and equitable international order, founded upon respect for the sovereign equality of States and the self-determination of peoples.

The island’s foreign minister recalled that, for over six decades, Cuba has faced an economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States — a situation further aggravated by new measures, such as its inclusion on a unilateral list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism, and recent provisions aimed at cutting off fuel supplies.

He expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by governments across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean in the face of these policies, and reiterated that, despite this aggressive escalation, Cuba will continue to defend its independence and contribute its expertise—particularly in the healthcare sector—within the framework of South-South cooperation.
