African Diaspora educational method is presented in Cuba

by Ed Newman

The Regional Office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Havana has presented the African Diaspora game, a novel educational method.

According to the announcement from the UN specialized agency, the presentation took place Tuesday morning at the House of Africa Museum, located in Old Havana.

African Diaspora is an “innovative educational resource that proposes competition and cooperation to learn, connect, and build new stories about Africa and its descendants in the Caribbean,” according to the Regional Office.

Through illustrated cards, game boards, and creative activities, participants can spatially and temporally locate episodes, characters, and Afro-descendant traditions from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, inspired by the general history of the African continent.

This initiative aims to reframe African history from the perspective of the region’s citizens and their descendants in the three Latin American countries.

The game is designed for small groups or classrooms and can be used by teachers, students, families, communities, and groups of children over nine years old in formal and non-formal educational settings, according to the UNESCO Regional Office.
