The IX Latin American and Caribbean Continental Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba begins this Thursday and runs through Sunday, the 12th, in Mexico City. Among its objectives is greater regional coordination to strengthen actions against Washington’s economic blockade of the Caribbean nation.
According to Lilia María Zamora Rodríguez, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at ICAP, more than 300 delegates and guests from 27 nations, as well as the United States, Canada, Spain and Lebanon are in attendance.
The Commander-in-Chief’s legacy will be present at the sessions, and the keynote address: “Fidel and Latin American and Caribbean Unity” will be delivered by Aleida Guevara, Che Guevara’s daughter. Brazilian theologian Frei Betto and Haitian professor Camille Chalmers will also take part.
The Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, organizer of the forum, announced among the agenda topics the promotion of solidarity projects with Cuba in the economic sphere, and actions in support of Palestine and the just causes of the peoples; anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, and anti-fascism; and the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
The sessions will feature lectures on Cuban youth as a continuity and guarantee of the Revolution; the battle of ideas in communication; an update on the impact of the blockade and relations with the United States.
Attending for Cuba are Fernando González, one of the Cuban Five and now president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP); Ambassador Marcos Rodríguez Costa; Fernando Rojas, of the Network of Intellectuals in Defense of Humanity; Johana Tablada, of MINREX; Lilia María Zamora Rodríguez, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at ICAP; Leima Martínez Freyre, Director for North America at ICAP; young congressman Elián González; and five-time Olympic champion Mijaín López.
