The Brazilian government is considering following the example of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and sending a shipment of humanitarian aid to Cuba, focusing on medicines and basic food supplies, the news portal Brasil de Fato reported today.
According to the news outlet, the Brazilian Ministry of Agrarian Development informed them that the action is being coordinated by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The latter agency indicated to the online newspaper that the country is developing a cooperation program with Cuba, which includes the initiatives announced during President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s visit to Havana for the G77 + China Summit.
The statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that at a high-level meeting on public policies for food sovereignty, held in Havana in September 2025, concrete opportunities for bilateral, trilateral, and multilateral cooperation were identified.
These latter initiatives are coordinated with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Global Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty, and a Bilateral Working Group was established in December to oversee them.
Furthermore, since 2023, Brazil has donated medicines, medical supplies, and vaccines to Cuba, and also sent the island strategic first-aid kits, water purification equipment, and dehydrated food for the victims of Hurricane Melissa, which struck the Caribbean nation on October 29, the Itamaraty Palace added.
Finally, the statement indicated that the Brazilian government is currently supporting Cuba in managing an arbovirus outbreak by donating insecticides, rapid test kits, oral rehydration salt packets, and motorized backpack sprayers.
After US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 29 threatening tariffs on those who supply or sell oil to Cuba, numerous Brazilian organizations and figures have condemned this tightening of the blockade against the island, which deprives it of access to the fuel necessary for a wide range of activities.
Last week, during an event commemorating the 46th anniversary of the Workers’ Party, Lula stated that Brazil stands in solidarity with the Cuban people, who are victims of a speculative massacre by the United States.
“We, as a party, must find ways to help. What can we do?” the president added during the event held in Salvador, Bahia.
Meanwhile, Brazilian grassroots organizations mobilized around the “Oil for Cuba” campaign, which calls on Lula’s government to urgently send fuel to the Caribbean nation, in conjunction with Petrobras.
Likewise, the Landless Rural Workers Movement and other groups are promoting an initiative to purchase medicines and send them to Cuba.
