Brazil’s ambassador to Cuba, Christian Vargas, highlighted the ongoing policy of solidarity and mutual cooperation as he delivered a donation of resources on Tuesday for residents of eastern Cuba affected by Hurricane Melissa.

During a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment (MINCEX), the diplomat emphasized that the assistance provided on this occasion—which includes 50 water purifiers, 10 tons of dehydrated food, and strategic medicine kits to assist more than 5,500 people affected—is part of the Brazilian government and society’s “constant presence” alongside the Cuban people.

“This is not an isolated incident,” stated Vargas, who noted that since his arrival in Havana in 2023, more than 10 technical cooperation projects have been relaunched in areas such as health, education, and agricultural production.

He also highlighted the receipt of previous donations of medications for tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, dialysis, pediatric vaccines, and antibiotics, in addition to the recent delivery of 300 solar panel systems.

He announced that more than 20,000 doses of the BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine for tuberculosis will arrive in January 2026, as part of the ongoing cooperation between the two countries.

The ambassador emphasized that Brazilian solidarity “is not only governmental, but also social,” as evidenced by the active mobilization of support groups for Cuba in his country. “We will continue along this same path next year,” he affirmed, while wishing the Cuban people a happy and prosperous 2026.

For his part, the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment (MINCEX), Carlos Luís Jorge Méndez, expressed his gratitude for the timely and targeted aid, underscoring that it addresses the most pressing needs following the disaster: electricity, food, and medicine.

He also highlighted the solidarity and cooperation of the people and government of Brazil and several other nations, which he attributed to the recognition of Cuba for its long tradition of international cooperation in global crises.

Both officials agreed on the need to strengthen economic and trade ties. bilateral talks, with a view to leveraging the “many unexplored opportunities” between Brasilia and Havana.
