Brazilian activists launch solar panel campaign for schools in Cuba

by Ed Newman

Activists from the Latin American Continental Network launched a campaign in Brazil to provide solar panels to Cuban schools. Fernanda Tardim, the project coordinator, explained that the goal is to ensure electricity in educational centers in the face of the energy crisis. This effort is a direct response to the impact of the US blockade, which systematically hinders the island’s sovereign development.

The campaign has the support of organizations such as the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) and the Unified Workers’ Central (CUT). These organizations seek to mobilize the solidarity of millions of Brazilians to counter the aggressive policies of the White House. The official launch will be held virtually with the participation of intellectuals and artists committed to defending Cuba.

The initiative arose after Donald Trump’s executive order labeling Cuba a supposed threat to national security. This measure seeks to strangle the Cuban economy through tariffs on the nations that supply it with oil. Activists denounce these actions as part of a genocidal embargo that attempts to subdue the Cuban people by depriving them of resources.

Tardim emphasized that, although they continue to collect food and medicine, advancing energy sovereignty is a strategic and vital step. He described the US embargo as a criminal obstacle that impedes the technological and social progress of the Caribbean nation. For the organizers, Brazil must lead the solidarity effort to help Cuba overcome the restrictions imposed by imperialism.

The project has the support of Brazilian parliamentarians who see solidarity as a tool for political resistance and fraternity. The organizations denounce Washington’s harassment as an attempt to punish any country that maintains sovereign trade relations with the island. Faced with this hostility, social mobilization in Brazil is strengthening to demonstrate that the Cuban people are not alone.

The campaign reinforces the historic cooperation between popular movements in the region and the Cuban Revolution. Activists maintain that Cuba’s resilience in the face of adversity is an inspiration for the entire Latin American continent. With the use of clean energy in schools, the Global South is sending a clear message that solidarity can overcome policies of strangulation.
