Chilean Socialists launch solidarity campaign with Cuba

by Ed Newman

Members of the Socialist Party (PS) in Santiago de Chile have launched a campaign in support of Cuba and extended an invitation to the entire community to reciprocate the support of a country that has always been in solidarity with Chile.

At an event held at the Salvador Allende Hall at the PS headquarters, the initiative was launched to collect medicines to send to Cuban hospitals.

“This is a gesture of reciprocity because many young socialists can practice medicine here today thanks to having graduated in Cuba,” the president of the Santiago branch, Ismael Calderón, told Prensa Latina.    He noted that the Cuban people are experiencing many hardships due to the energy blockade imposed by US President Donald Trump.

“Cuba has always been supportive of Chile. I remember that during the Popular Unity government, they helped us with food shortages by sending us sugar,” said Jorge Madrid.

He also mentioned that a brigade of Cuban doctors worked in the disaster zones after the 2010 earthquake in Chile.

The mayor of the Pedro Aguirre Cerda district, Luis Astudillo, noted that he was one of the Chileans welcomed with open arms at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), whose objective was to train Doctors of Science and conscience.

“Thousands of young people graduated from that medical school in Havana, not only from Chile and Latin America, but even from the United States.”

In his speech, Astudillo recalled that the Caribbean island has distinguished itself by having one of the best medical schools in the world and has achieved advances that even the most developed nations have not reached, such as the meningitis vaccine.

The event was attended by the Cuban ambassador to Chile, Oscar Cornelio Oliva, the chief advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vivian Delgado, and the first secretary in charge of political affairs, Rosario Rodríguez.

Performances included those by Mauricio Redolés, Jorge Martínez, Pedro Núñez, and soprano Tavita.
