Colombians debate alternatives to strengthen solidarity with Cuba

by Ed Newman
Attendees at the 34th National Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba in Colombia, which was held in Cali, discussed how to break the blockade imposed by the United States and ways to increase support for the island.

During his intervention in the forum “Update on the Intensification of the Blockade against Cuba and Continental Solidarity in Response,” the general coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Continental Network of Solidarity with Cuba and Just Causes, Norberto Galiotti, explained how Washington’s unilateral siege against the Caribbean country is intensifying.

He told the attendees that to strengthen support for the Cuban people, it is necessary to increase unity and convince a greater number of people of the need to join the task.  He emphasized that it is necessary to “open the doors of our homes to reach all the popular sectors, to enamor them with the idea that a better world, a world without a blockade, a world with sovereignty, is possible.”

However, he emphasized that this mobilization will only be achieved through unity, through the coordination of all solidarity efforts, and called for this task to be undertaken with “revolutionary passion, with the passion of the love of the people.”  He then asked the audience how they would break the blockade, and they responded with greater solidarity and resistance.

For his part, the national coordinator of the Venezuela-Cuba Friendship and Solidarity Movement, Jhonny García, noted that the Bolivarian country recently sent a ship to Cuba with 6,000 tons of essential products.

The activist stated that the Gual vessel opened the way for the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Treaty shipping route.  García added that they are working with the Italian Association of Solidarity with Cuba to acquire construction supplies to assist families affected last year by the earthquake that struck the eastern region of the Caribbean nation.

“It’s about seeing how we break the blockade so that Cuba can continue investing in its development,” he stated.

Four working groups met on the topics of Solidarity Youth; Effective Solidarity with Cuba; Counter-Hegemonic and Popular Communication against the Blockade and Imperialist Interventionism; and Strengthening and Growth of the Colombia-Cuba Solidarity Movement.

The meeting, held at the Sole Union of Education Workers of Valle del Cauca (Sutev) building, was held under the slogan “No More Blockade Against Cuba, Enough Is Enough!”
