Cuba calls for defense of the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace against militarization

by Ed Newman

The International Relations Committee of the Cuban National Assembly called on the peoples of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States to defend the region as a Zone of Peace in the face of increasing U.S. militarization in the area.

In a statement released issued on Friday, Cuban legislators endorsed the denunciation by the president of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) regarding the disproportionate deployment of U.S. naval and air forces in the Caribbean, which includes a nuclear submarine and thousands of military personnel.

The committee noted that dozens of people have already died in attacks by U.S. forces against civilian vessels, acts it described as extrajudicial executions and flagrant violations of international law.

They warned that, under the pretext of combating drug trafficking, the current White House administration seeks to “provoke the overthrow of the constitutional government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela” and seize its natural resources.

They also condemned Washington’s recent decision to arbitrarily close Venezuelan airspace, a measure they described as a “very serious threat” and an act of “psychological warfare,” echoing the condemnation expressed days earlier by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez.

The Cuban parliamentarians denounced the recent militarization in the Caribbean as a response to the “philosophy of imperial domination” based on the Monroe Doctrine and as a “blatant interference” in the region’s sovereign affairs.

Finally, they urged legislators, media outlets, and citizens of the world to amplify their calls for peace, mobilize in international forums, and act urgently to prevent bloodshed in Latin America, the Caribbean, and among the American people themselves.
