Cuba condemns terrorist attack in Australia

Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, condemned today the terrorist attack perpetrated this Sunday during a Jewish celebration in Sydney, Australia, with a preliminary death toll of 15 and more than 40 wounded.

Through the social network X, the Head of State conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of that nation in Oceania.

“Cuba, which has long been a victim of terrorism, rejects all manifestations of this grave scourge,” Díaz-Canel wrote in his message.

“We condemn the terrorist attack against a Jewish celebration in #Sydney, Australia, which has resulted in loss of life. We send our deepest condolences to the government and people of that nation.”

On the same social media platform, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, a member of the Political Bureau and Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed his condolences, especially to the families and friends of the deceased.

Bruno Rodríguez reiterated Cuba’s firm and unwavering stance against any manifestation of terrorism.

Australian authorities are still investigating the details and motive of the attack, which occurred this Sunday during a Jewish community event on the popular Bondi Beach in eastern Sydney, the capital of New South Wales. The attack has been classified as an act of terrorism.

According to New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon, the two men who terrorized Bondi Beach with rifles were father and son, Sajid Akram (killed in the shooting) and his son Naveed, 50 and 24 years old, respectively.

The attackers opened fire on a crowd of more than one thousand people preparing to celebrate the first day of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights.

Cuba maintains a principled stance of absolute rejection of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, a state policy that has been reinforced by having been, over decades, the target of numerous terrorist acts sponsored from abroad, which have caused pain and irreparable losses to Cuban families.
