Cuba denounces fraudulent U.S. terrorist designation of Venezuela

by Ed Newman

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla strongly rejected the recent designation by the Donald Trump administration that labels Venezuela a “foreign terrorist organization,” calling it “a new arbitrary, fraudulent, unilateral, and politically motivated act.”

The measure was announced by the US president on social media, where he also ordered a blockade of “all authorized oil tankers entering and leaving” Venezuela, demanding the illegitimate return of “all the oil, land, and other assets that were stolen from us.” Trump asserted that “Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest armada ever assembled in the history of South America” and accused the “illegitimate Maduro regime” of financing “narco-terrorism, human trafficking, murder, and kidnapping” with resources from oil fields.

In response, Bruno Rodríguez questioned the moral legitimacy of the United States to issue such accusations: “What moral authority does the US government have for these designations when it protects and finances terrorist organizations on its territory, refuses to cooperate with neighboring countries like Cuba on matters of terrorism, and speaks openly of covert CIA actions and sabotage against Venezuelan infrastructure?”

The Cuban Foreign Minister stated that these actions only seek to internationally isolate the Bolivarian Revolution, increase pressure on Caracas, and “escalate an aggression with unpredictable consequences for the peace, security, and stability of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

“All our solidarity and support to the Venezuelan people and government in the face of this infamous barbarity,” Rodríguez Parrilla concluded. Cuba’s firm stance against Trump’s declarations once again places the island against U.S. interference in Latin American affairs and the United States’ disrespect for the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, signed in Havana in 2014.
