Havana, February 26 (RHC) – The Cuban men’s softball team fell 5-0 to Colombia today and remained alone in last place in the Super Round of the Pan American Championship being held in the Colombian city of Montería.
The Cubans, who lost to Mexico this morning with a final score of 3-0, suffered their sixth defeat with only one win in this phase and will no longer be able to secure one of the five available spots for the first round of the World Cup, nor one of the six spots the event awarded for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.
A three-run rally by the Colombians in the very first inning against the starting pitcher, Rafael Guerra, who took the loss. Jeison Anillo and Adonay Boscan launched softballs over the field, giving their team a comfortable lead.
Another run in the third, when a single, a hit-by-pitch, and a couple of wild pitches combined to increase the hosts’ advantage, and another home run by Boscan in the sixth sealed the victory.
Luis Amaya earned the credit for pitching a complete game with total dominance, allowing only two hits and striking out 16 batters.
Tomorrow, Friday, the Cubans will play their final game of this stage against the Dominican Republic.
The standings show Venezuela and Argentina at the top with five wins and one loss, followed by Mexico and Canada (4-2), the United States (3-3), the Dominican Republic and Colombia (2-4), Panama (2-5), and Cuba (1-6).
