Havama, March 5 (RHC) – The game between the Cuban national team and Uruguay in the second FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Qualifying Window resulted in a very tough defeat for the Cubans.
The game, held at the Roberto Durán Arena in Panama City, started closely contested, so much so that at halftime the Uruguayans were only ahead by a single point.
The Cubans lost the first quarter 20-17 and won the second 19-17, giving them a glimmer of hope for victory; however, a disastrous 22-11 third quarter dashed all hopes.
The final period confirmed the undeniable defeat, as the Uruguayans extended their lead to 29-15, sealing the final score at 88-62.
This 26-point difference puts them in a very precarious position to advance in the event of a tie with any of the other teams in Group D of the Americas, where they currently sit in last place without a single win.
The fourth consecutive defeat for the Island team resulted in significantly lower numbers than their opponent in every aspect, leading to the conclusion that they have lost their way, even considering they were competitive in the first half.
This forces them to defeat Panama in the final window, which will take place in June of this year, in order to advance as the third-place team in the group and hope that Panama loses their other of the two remaining matches.
