Cuba honors its fallen combatants in Venezuela

by Ed Newman

This Thursday, the mortal remains of the 32 Cuban combatants who heroically fell during the criminal attack perpetrated by the United States government against the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on January 3 arrive in Cuba.

Upon arrival, they will receive the first posthumous tribute in a military ceremony at José Martí International Airport in Havana. They will then be transported along Rancho Boyeros Avenue to the headquarters of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR), near Revolution Square.

During the procession, a group of people, gathered on both sides of the road, will pay heartfelt tribute to the compatriots who fell in the South American country in the line of duty.

Starting at 10:00 AM, the public will be allowed access to the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR) headquarters, where the remains of the combatants will be on display, to receive the well-deserved tribute and show their respect.

Tomorrow, Friday, January 16, at 7:30 a.m., Havana residents will gather at the José Martí Anti-Imperialist Tribune to participate in the ceremony that will kick off the March of the Combatant People, reaffirming the Cuban people’s commitment to their homeland and to the memory of their heroes.

At 9:00 a.m. that same Friday, tribute ceremonies will be held in all provincial capitals, and later that afternoon, the remains will be interred in the pantheons of those who fell in defense of their respective localities. Similarly, posthumous tributes will be held in every municipality across the country.

“Honor and Glory!” That is the maxim that accompanies these days of popular dismay, deep admiration and repudiation for the brutal act where those who today return to the embrace of the Homeland offered their lives.
