Cuba rejects U.S. slander regarding Medicare fraud

by Ed Newman

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denounced as slander the statements by US officials who speculate, without providing evidence, about the alleged involvement of the Cuban government in fraud against the Medicare health program in South Florida.

In a statement released in Havana, the Cuban Foreign Ministry attributed these accusations to anti-Cuban sectors and warned that this is yet another offense in the disinformation strategy against the island.

The MINREX statement reiterated the island’s firm stance against transnational crimes and recalled that the US government “is well aware” of this position due to the long-standing bilateral cooperation on security matters.

According to the official statement, both nations have coordinated joint actions to combat terrorism, illicit drug trafficking, immigration fraud, cybercrime, and money laundering, although it lamented the lack of full reciprocity from Washington authorities.

The Ministry highlighted that Cuba has already prosecuted individuals on its territory linked to Medicare fraud and has used bilateral mechanisms to request and share information on financial crimes.

It also demanded the return of Cuban citizens who evaded justice on the island and reside in the United States.

Cuban authorities accused the U.S. officials cited in the allegations of knowingly misrepresenting the truth.

The government reiterated its willingness to jointly confront these crimes through the timely exchange of information.
