Cuba has denounced at the United Nations Security Council the use of hunger as a weapon of war and called for global political will to eradicate it.
According to the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the open debate dedicated to food insecurity linked to conflicts, Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized that more than 638 to 720 million people suffered from hunger in 2024, between seven and eight percent of the world’s population.
The source emphasizes that the diplomat expressed solidarity with African countries still suffering the aftereffects of colonialism and protracted conflicts, and warned that recent studies confirm that armed conflicts are the main trigger of acute food insecurity, affecting 140 million people in 20 countries and territories.
The text highlights that Soberón also denounced the dramatic situation in the Gaza Strip, where more than half a million people are facing famine and 98.5 percent of agricultural land is destroyed or inaccessible.
The statement notes that Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the UN stated that hunger is being used as a weapon of war against the Palestinian people, holding Israel responsible for crimes of genocide and extermination, with political and military support from the United States.
The source adds that the diplomat reiterated that the planet has sufficient resources to guarantee food and development with social justice, but these are concentrated and squandered by the major powers on armaments and hegemonic policies.
In this regard, the publication highlights that he called for the establishment of a new, just, equitable, and democratic international economic order, capable of eradicating global inequalities and extreme poverty.
