Cuban ambassador thanks the Mexican people for their solidarity

by Ed Newman

The Cuban ambassador to Mexico, Eugenio Martínez, expressed his gratitude for the solidarity shown by this North American country in response to the call from local organizations to collect food and medicine for the island.

“In the Zócalo, we embraced the participants in the beautiful demonstration of solidarity with Cuba organized by Va por Cuba and the José Martí Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico,” the diplomat stated in a message on his social media account.

Martínez affirmed that hundreds of people contributed material donations for Cuba. “Cuba is not alone. Thank you, Mexico!” he expressed.

A few days ago, the aforementioned organizations invited people to participate in the campaign “From Town to Town, Let’s End the Blockade,” which will be held in Mexico City’s Zócalo from this Saturday until February 22.

“We have seen the massive response from the Mexican people. Long before the tent opened, there were already people lined up with their donations,” Olivia Garza, vice president of the Association, told Prensa Latina, describing the turnout as impressive.

“It’s been so full that we’ve had to ask two trucks to take away boxes, because otherwise we wouldn’t all fit in the tent, and we still have a lot to collect,” she commented with three hours remaining on the first day of the initiative.

Regarding the message this reaction from the Mexican people sends to U.S. President Donald Trump, Garza maintained that Washington’s aggressive policy “will not prevail against the Cuban people, nor will it be able to block international solidarity.”

The campaign comes after Trump signed an executive order in January declaring a supposed national emergency and establishing a process to impose tariffs on goods from countries that supply crude oil to the Caribbean nation.

Organizations have warned that cutting off access to oil would paralyze the country, affecting critical sectors such as electricity generation, hospital operations, food production and distribution, and water pumping.

The campaign, launched this Saturday, joins other tangible displays of solidarity from within the country, such as the arrival of 814 tons of aid sent by the government at the port of Havana last Thursday and President Claudia Sheinbaum’s decision to send further shipments.
