Havana, November 17 (RHC) – Cuban Dylan Berdayes, undefeated and with a steady hand, defends his place today among the leaders of the Master group of the Carlos Torre in Memoriam International Tournament.
After four of nine rounds in Progreso, Berdayes has 3.5 points and is second on tiebreaks in a group that also includes fellow Cuban Luis Ernesto Quesada, representing Mexico, Colombian Joshua Daniel Ruiz, and Ukrainian Viktor Matviishen.
The fifth round offers some interesting matchups: Berdayes will face Quesada on the top board, while Ruiz will play Matviishen on the other top board.
To reach his current score, Berdayes defeated Mexican Julio César Díaz and then drew with Ruiz. Quesada drew with Cuban Michel Alejandro Díaz and later defeated Mexican Atlas Adomaytis Galaviz.
Horseback on the leaders is fellow Cuban Michel Alejandro Díaz, with three points, after drawing with Peruvian Jorge Cori, who has the highest Elo rating in the tournament (2599).
Cuban Lelys Martínez also finished with 2.5 points; his compatriots Yusuan Gutiérrez, Ermes Espinosa, Elier Miranda, and Rodney Pérez each have 2.5 points. Cubans Juan Borges, Amanda Múñiz, and Yoana González each have 2 points, while Róxangel Obregón, the junior Daniel Hidalgo, and Karen Espinosa, all representing Cuba, have 1.5 points.
The ninth and final round will be played on Friday, the traditional closing of the competitive season in Mexico, where the last Cuban to win the title was Carlos Daniel Albornoz from Camagüey, in 2023.
