Havana, October 14 (RHC) – Cuban Jesús Cuevas finished 13th in the 72-kilogram elite division of the 2025 Cairo World Paraweight Championships in Egypt.
Cuevas completed two valid lifts of 187 and 190 kilograms, but failed to lift 192 kg. Following this result, he accumulated a total of 377 kg, insufficient for a podium finish.
Three-time world champion and current world record holder from Malaysia, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, lifted 216, 226, and 230 kg for a total of 672 kg, confirming his title in the event.
Amir Jafari of Iran lifted 186, 193, and 202 kg for a total of 581 kg and a silver medal. The bronze medal went to Carlos Betancourt of Venezuela, who lifted 171, 176, and 181 kg for a total of 528 kg.
Gustin also won the title among the all-around best lifts. His lift of 230 kg was just two kilograms short of the world record.
The silver medalist was China’s Pingkang Zhan (222 kg), followed by the runner-up at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Britain’s Mark Swan (217 kg).
In this category, Cuban Cuevas placed eighth with his lift of 190 kg.
This Tuesday, Guantanamo Paralympic runner-up Pablo Ramírez will compete representing the island in the 54 kg division.
So far, the leading countries are China (5-3-1) and Nigeria (5-2-2), in that order. The hosts are right behind them (4-3-4).
The elite competition of the world championship continues until October 18.
The schedule also includes medals in the women’s weight classes up to 41 and 45 kg.
