Havana, February 17 (RHC) – Cuban Marcos Alejandro Fernández won the gold medal in the Under-23 Sprint category at the Bridgetown 2026 World Triathlon Regional Development Cup, held in Barbados.

Fernández clocked 58 minutes and 28 seconds after completing the 750-meter swim in 9:56, the 20-kilometer bike ride in 31:12, and the 5-kilometer run in 16:38, according to the Facebook page Camino a Los Ángeles 2028 (Road to Los Angeles 2028).

Guatemalan Jorge Raúl Cabnai finished second with a time of 59:21 (9:34, 31:35, and 17:22), and Barbados native Luke McIntyre took third place with a time of 59:36 (9:59, 30:52, and 17:37).

In the competition, which featured 17 triathletes from the region, the young Cuban was the only one to break the 59-minute barrier, thanks to a consistent performance throughout the three segments leading up to the final stretch, securing his victory.

Marcos Alejandro’s win marks a promising start for Cuban triathlon in the 2026 season, and it was especially valuable for him as a gauge of his physical condition, given the cancellation of the traditional Havana Triathlon Cup on February 21st due to the difficult situation facing Cuba.
